Coco Robotics Brings Autonomous Delivery to Washington, D.C.

By editorial News

Coco Robotics, a leader in urban robot delivery, has announced its expansion into Washington, D.C., with operations slated to begin this summer. The move marks the company’s latest entry into a major U.S. market, aiming to help local restaurants and retailers streamline deliveries while cutting down on traffic, emissions, and curb congestion. The service will initially launch in the Logan Circle neighborhood, with plans to expand to other key districts across the city.

How the Service Works

Customers ordering through delivery partners like DoorDash may see Coco’s compact robots as a delivery option at checkout. Upon arrival, the robot sends a notification, and recipients unlock the lid via the app to retrieve their order—no tips or extra fees required. By reducing last-mile delivery costs by up to 20 percent, Coco aims to make it more affordable for customers to order frequently from local businesses.

Community and Regulatory Collaboration

Designed for dense, walkable neighborhoods, Coco’s robots operate at low speeds, yield to pedestrians, and maintain a small footprint. Ahead of the launch, Coco coordinated with the District Department of Transportation and local stakeholders to align with D.C.’s safety and regulatory standards. The company has also integrated with BlindSquare, a navigation app for people with visual impairments, to ensure sidewalks remain accessible for all residents.

Supporting Restaurants and the Local Economy

Shawn Townsend, President and CEO of the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington, praised the initiative, noting that innovative delivery tools help restaurants serve more customers while keeping staff focused on core operations. Coco’s operations also create local jobs: for every ten robots deployed, about one full-time, upskilled role is generated in areas like fleet management, maintenance, and robotics support.

CEO’s Vision for Urban Logistics

Zach Rash, Co-Founder and CEO of Coco Robotics, emphasized the broader goal: “Great cities deserve delivery infrastructure that works for everyone—not just customers, but restaurants, workers, and neighborhoods. Our goal isn’t simply to make deliveries more efficient. It’s to help local businesses grow, make delivery more affordable, reduce unnecessary car trips, and build technology that fits naturally into the communities it serves.”

Track Record and Future Growth

Coco has completed over 500,000 zero-emission deliveries across U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Jersey City, and San Jose, as well as Helsinki and Turku in Finland. Each deployment helps refine autonomous delivery for safer sidewalks and smarter urban logistics. The Washington, D.C., launch accelerates the company’s scaling efforts, with a target of thousands of vehicles in operation by the end of 2026.
