Kraken Robotics Acquires Covelya Group for $615M
Kraken Robotics Inc. has completed its acquisition of Covelya Group Ltd. for approximately $432 million USD ($615 million CAD). The Canadian subsea technology company announced the deal last week, stating that the move aligns with its strategy of delivering dual-use technologies to customers across defense and commercial sectors.
“This acquisition positions Kraken as a global provider of mission-critical, dual-use subsea intelligence solutions,” said Greg Reid, CEO of Kraken Robotics. He noted that customers have already responded positively to the combination of engineering teams and integrated subsea technology capabilities. “Together, Kraken and Covelya Group bring complementary products, technological capabilities, and customer relationships that we expect will strengthen Kraken’s growth potential and long-term outlook,” Reid added, pointing to rising global defense budgets and increasing investment in autonomous underwater systems as supportive factors.
Strategic Benefits and Market Expansion
Kraken Robotics said the acquisition will broaden its product portfolio and expand its total addressable market in subsea technology. It also aims to deepen relationships with customers in defense and maritime surveillance, while opening new geographic markets and improving business diversification. Financially, the company expects to realize approximately $7 million in cost synergies within 24 months.
Covelya Group comprises several specialized subsea technology firms: Sonardyne, which provides end-to-end maritime systems; Wavefront Systems, known for sonar solutions including Sentinel Intruder Detection Sonar and Solstice Multi Aperture Side-Scan Sonar; Chelsea Technologies, offering sensors for shipping, marine science, water quality, and defense; EIVA, supplying software and integrated systems for maritime operations; Voyis, developing optical systems for underwater environments; and Forcys, which delivers and integrates underwater technology for navies and military organizations.

Organizational Restructuring and Integration
As part of the integration with Covelya Group and its subsidiaries, Kraken is implementing a new organizational structure. The company will establish Kraken Group to oversee financial and organizational governance, while Kraken Robotics will operate as a clearly defined separate business unit. A dedicated integration team has been formed to merge employees, systems, finance, sales, and operations, aiming to capture both revenue and cost synergies.
Headquartered in Mount Pearl, Canada, Kraken Robotics has been active in the subsea sector with products and services designed for safe, efficient, and sustainable ocean operations. Last year, the company closed an underwritten public offering raising over $115 million. A few months prior, Kraken acquired 3D at Depth Inc., a subsea services firm specializing in high-resolution lidar imaging and measurements, which now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary.
