Milestones for China’s medical AI as robot wins EU nod and model tops benchmark
Shanghai MicroPort MedBot announced on Monday that its Toumai Remote surgical robot has been granted the CE mark by the European Union, making it the first remote surgical robot to achieve this certification. The CE mark is a mandatory requirement for products to enter the European market, ensuring they meet EU safety, health, and environmental standards.
The Toumai system consists of three key components: a surgeon console, a patient cart, and a vision cart. By integrating advanced 5G technology, the robot enables remote laparoscopic procedures across urology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, and gynecology.
This EU approval follows a historic milestone in March, when the Toumai robot was used in the UK to perform the country's first robotic telesurgery. A London surgeon successfully removed a prostate from a cancer patient in Gibraltar, located approximately 2,400 kilometers away, as reported by the BBC.
According to MedBot's WeChat post on Monday, over 300 Toumai units have been delivered to more than 60 markets worldwide.
AI Model Tops Global Benchmark
In a separate advance, China's clinical AI model, Baichuan-M4, has outperformed global rivals in OpenAI's HealthBench, a leading benchmark for medical artificial intelligence. The model's top ranking underscores the growing competitiveness of Chinese AI in the healthcare sector, although specific performance metrics were not detailed in the announcement.
These dual achievements—surgical robotics and clinical AI—highlight China's accelerating progress in medical technology, as the nation seeks to establish a stronger presence in global healthcare innovation.
