Orbbec Introduces Robot-Free Data Collection Platform to Accelerate Physical AI Training
As physical artificial intelligence transitions from controlled lab environments into practical applications, the demand for high-quality, real-world training data is surging. Addressing this need, Orbbec has announced the launch of its Robot-Free Data Collection Hardware Platform, designed to help global customers efficiently capture multimodal demonstration data at scale without relying on a specific robot body.
The platform, built around Orbbecâs EGO, UMI, and WristCam product series, offers standardized hardware along with contract manufacturing (CM) and joint design manufacturing (JDM) services. It targets physical AI model companies, robot OEMs, data collection service providers, and other algorithm-driven enterprises that require robust data infrastructure for model training, teleoperation, and robotic policy optimization.
Overcoming Engineering Challenges in Data Collection
Real-world interaction data is becoming critical infrastructure for physical AI, yet the industry faces multiple engineering hurdles. Spatial relationships among multi-view devicesâincluding RGB cameras, depth cameras, and IMUsâdemand high-precision joint calibration for both intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. Sub-millisecond time synchronization and spatial coordinate alignment across multiple devices remain difficult, directly impacting multi-source data fusion quality.
Additionally, during close-range operations like grasping and holding objects, critical hand-object interaction details can be lost due to occlusion. In large-scale deployments, ensuring device consistency, stability, and supply chain efficiency adds further complexity.
Orbbecâs platform addresses these pain points with a modular product layout covering first-person observation, wrist-level near-field capture, and hand-object interaction detail. It can be flexibly configured based on task type, collector scale, and sensor combination.

Full-Stack Capabilities for High-Quality Data at Scale
Orbbec leverages its deep expertise in robotics and AI vision to provide end-to-end solutions. For spatial consistency, the company employs mature joint calibration processes and self-developed equipment for high-distortion fisheye lenses and heterogeneous sensors. This ensures strict 3D alignment of data from multiple viewpoints.
Temporal consistency is achieved through hardware-level multi-device synchronized triggering, enabling microsecond-level clock synchronization and precise frame-level alignment. This reduces temporal offset errors in multi-source data.
Product consistency is supported by Orbbecâs scaled manufacturing and global delivery capabilities. The company has delivered multiple million-unit mass-production projects and maintains a digital quality management system covering R&D through after-sales service. Its dual-factory strategy across China and Vietnam, with a new RVMC factory in Vietnam now under construction, provides resilient global capacity.
With a full-stack robotics vision product matrix encompassing RGB, structured light, stereo vision, ToF, and LiDAR, Orbbec can quickly tailor optimized vision combinations for different collection environments without forcing customers to compromise on standardized hardware limits.
Ecosystem Collaboration to Empower Physical AI
âPhysical AI is increasingly becoming a competition of real-world data production capabilities,â said Len Zhong, Head of Product and Technical Support at Orbbec. âThrough our Robot-Free Data Collection Hardware Platform, Orbbec aims to leverage its robotics and AI vision platform capabilities to help global customers lower the barrier to building data collection infrastructure.â
As a key collaboration milestone, Orbbecâs RGB-D EGO device is being adapted to LingBot-Depth 2.0, the latest spatial perception model from Robbyant, an embodied AI company within Ant Group. Trained on 150 million samples, the model offers significant improvements in edge clarity, small object recognition, and robustness in complex environments. The adapted device will deliver precise, stable real-world data for embodied AI training.
