Reservoir Acquires Contain to Accelerate Agtech Startup Scaling

By editorial News

Investment firm Reservoir Co. has completed its first-ever corporate acquisition, purchasing agriculture finance and data platform Contain Inc. As part of the deal, the firm has appointed Contain’s founder, Nicola Kerslake, as a general partner. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Kerslake to Lead Investment Strategy

Kerslake will chair Reservoir VC’s investment committee and oversee underwriting as the firm deepens its focus on agricultural equipment and controlled environment agriculture (CEA). The goal is to help “rugged AI” startups transition from pilot projects to commercial scale. “Reservoir invests where AI, hardware, and agriculture meet in the field, and those companies need capital partners who understand deployment, unit economics, and business models,” said Danny Bernstein, founder and CEO of Reservoir and managing partner of Reservoir VC. “Nicola built that discipline at Contain. Bringing her and the Contain platform into Reservoir can offer startups models that better align with the realities of scaling rugged AI-enabled technology.”

Expanding Support for Startups

The acquisition adds Contain’s marketplace, underwriting, financing, and market intelligence capabilities to Reservoir’s value-creation model. Based in Salinas, Calif., Reservoir is broadening how it assists startups moving from pilot to commercial deployment. “Reservoir is building a new trusted rural institution the sector has needed for a long time: Capital that understands hardware, incubator farms where that hardware is put to work, and diligence that doesn’t end at the data room,” said Kerslake. “Collaborating with Reservoir over the past six months developed our rugged AI thesis, and now I am excited to work more closely on developing Reservoir VC’s next fund.”

Kerslake’s Background in Agtech

Prior to founding Contain, Kerslake launched Newbean Capital and founded and sold Indoor Ag-Con, a major conference for indoor and controlled-environment farming. With over a decade of experience in early-stage venture capital, her background spans institutional investment, venture capital, and agricultural finance.

Upcoming Ruggedize Event

Reservoir will host Ruggedize, a two-day event in August 2026 focused on the challenges of building robots and automation for agriculture. The event will take place at Reservoir’s site in Salinas.
